Champagne, canapes, caviar – The best night of Hockey’s life

The dance party in Joe Hockey’s office was just the warm-up for a big night of revelry, with more than twelve thousand dollars spent on Budget night celebrations for the Treasurer and Finance Minister after they delivered the Abbott Government’s brutal first Budget.

On a night when almost every sector of the community reeled from deep cuts and increased cost of living as a result of the Budget measures, Government documents reveal the Treasurer spent $9,718 on catering for his post-Budget celebrations, whilst the Minister for Finance’s soiree cost a further $2,773.55.

Chair of Labor’s Waste Watch Committee, Pat Conroy, said the celebrations were a bad look.

“While Joe Hockey was asking the families of Australia to tighten their belts he was letting his out a notch at his $10,000 taxpayer funded party,” Mr Conroy said.

“After celebratory cigars and dancing, it has taken ten months for the Treasurer to admit that he then spent $10,000 of taxpayers’ money on a private party to celebrate this cruel budget.”

“Joe Hockey and Mathias Cormann have proved to be the ultimate leaners as they partied while the rest of Australia was hit by an unfair budget.”
