A glossary of big spenders

Joe Hockey

Feb 20, 2016

Joe Hockey will always be remembered as the Treasurer who asked ordinary Australians to tighten their belts while he and his Liberal mates refused to.

While the Age of Entitlement has ended for Joe (in Australia, at least) there are certain luxuries about the Treasurer’s job that he will surely miss.

There’s the cigars, the G20 junkets and the VIP flights, but he will likely miss Budget night most of all, given he spent around $20,000 of taxpayers’ money on his two post-Budget parties during his time as Treasurer.

He was the mastermind behind the GP Tax, the petrol tax, hiking up university fees and cutting pensions, but Hockey’s final act of cruelty was to burden taxpayers with a half a million dollar by-election for his North Sydney seat.
