A glossary of big spenders

Peter Dutton

Feb 17, 2016

Peter Dutton – like Dr Frankenstein – is responsible for creating the monster agency ‘The Australian Border Force’.

Duttonstein has splurged more than $10 million in taxpayer funds to buy branded material for his quasi-military outfit, including notebooks, flags and uniforms.

He destroyed items with the old ‘Customs’ logo, and also spent a further $62,000 to audit the ABF’s new look.

The civilian public service also spent $1.3 million on medals in the quest to militarise the portfolio, more than the Department of Defence.

Duttonstein has a soft side, though, having signed off on 2,000 ABF-branded toy dogs at a cost of $15,000, and he has previously forked out $88,000 for ‘Emotional Intelligence’ training for staff.

His media skills leave a lot to be desired, however.

Dutton was caught on camera joking about the effects of climate change on Pacific Island nations, blamed the media for the Operation Fortitude fiasco and accidentally sent a journalist a text message calling her a mad ‘witch’ – if anyone should be taking part in the $79,000 for media training he signed off on recently, it’s him.
